I realize this a popular topic and that several people are already debating the negatives of the increased temperature of the Planet Earth.
More things should be done, or so I believe. Less power used, less styrofoam, etc.
For anything to be done about the changes in our environment, it will require change and commitment to a new way of life. If everyone in the world lived like people do in the U.S. , it would require that we have over 10 planets to support ourselves. The goal of Environmental Science is Sustainability. That means that we live with enough resouces to survive indefinitely, meaning that none of the resouces are in danger of going out.
I'd love to know what you think.
Save the Trees! Or Ninjas will have no where to hide!
My, of the us clan.

I agree.
Everyone complains about how hot it's been getting (myself included) but no one ever does a damn thing about it. I try to do whatever I can, I don't burn plastics, I don't litter, I conserve things as much as possible. They keep cutting down tree and building places, and sure, it's nice to have a new place to go around here, but if you go down through Danville, you rarely ever see trees anymore. I know when I was growing up, I had a forest within walking distance of my back yard! Now, they've even torn THAT down! I mean come on, we need to leave SOME trees around the area at least...
Plants take in our Carbon Dioxide and turn it back into oxygen so we can breathe, a well known fact. So by taking them all away, and filling the air with even more fumes.. we're slowly killing ourselves... this is just ONE way.
Recycle, recycle, recycle. _________________

I also agree. this country does need to do alot more to save the planet. i think we need to put in alot more solar plants out west. i was watching this thing on tv once and it was about the solar plants. they look like a wonderful idea for recycling energy. im pretty sure theres quite a bit of space out west so i dont see why we cant do that. we should also build more of those wind farms too. those are good ideas to use the ways of our planet, i think. they should make solar panels not so expensive too. i would like to have a few of those on my house when i get old enough to own my own house. i think if people got solar panels and used those then they would save money and more of that money could be used for other things to save the planet. we should try planting plenty more trees too. And, like Ame-Chan mentioned, i think that some people in this country should stop being such scumbags and learn how to not litter. i was on the bus towards the end of the school year last year and i noticed along the road that people have thrown out tires, mcdonalds garbage, cans, and much more, near our pond. that really pissed me off. _________________

Burning plastics, running cars needlessly, littering, simple to avoid things would give us more years on this dying planet. People, and sadly including myself, are too lazy to travel by bike or feet... or even roller blades, and so for the people who wish to it's so dangerous so they avoid it... so now we have people driving to someone's house down the street, or to the store two minutes away when they could ride or walk. Unless you have a solar powered car or something, then all those needless drives are adding more toxins in the air. And plan to go to places all in one trip instead of making numerous ones... stuff like that. _________________ need one |

Actually those short needless trips are worse than you think. Each time you start an engine from cold, whether it's a bus, motorbike, car, jet ski, etc. it has to warm up, while the engine is warming up it needs more fuel to run, (which is why even on modern cars you still have an automatic choke.)
So those small trips consume more fuel per mile than a long trip would. Which in turn not only causes more pollution, but also means you have to fill up with gas more often, and consequently you are using more of the already rapidly dwindling crude oil supplies.
Plastic is not going to be much of a problem soon. You again need oil to produce plastic, so when that runs out so will the plastic. You do have cellulose based plastics, but those are the ones that biodegrade anyway.
Also there seems to be a big fuss made by the government about recycling etc. but they do nothing about the current mound of plastic that will not biodegrade for about the next 10,000 years. I find this puzzling and confusing. They claim that there is nothing that they can do about it, but I know of a newly developed fungus (Naturally mutated, not GM'ed) that actually eats plastic. It can't survive without it.
At the end of the day we are NOT destroying the planet. The planet was here billions of years before we were, and will be here billions more after we have gone. We are only destroying it for ourselves. Sure, other species will die to, but as the fungus above shows, new ones will appear to replace them. Nature has spent too long at creating life to stop just because we alter an element or two in the mix.
Basically anyone who complains that doing something for the environment is just to much trouble should ask themselves one simple question. "Do I want to die?" The planet as a whole will keep going and adapt, and eventually bring things back into balance, whether we as a species will be there to see it, is really up to us.
And I mean it's up to US. You, me, and everyone else. Not the government, US. If I do it, and you do it, and then someone else does it, it slowly spreads, eventually it spreads far enough that it becomes the norm rather than the exception.
I hear people complain that they can't do anything about the problem, that they are only one person etc. Rubbish. If you do nothing else, you can lead by example. If you think this doesn't work I suggest you go and look at why we now have cruelty free cosmetics and toiletries.
A few individuals found out how things were being tested on animals. They told others, who also told more people. Out of all those people told most of them were ambivalent. It would mean getting off their ass and actually doing something, which was too much trouble for them personally, so let's not bother. But some were bothered, and they also told others and/or lead by example. Eventually there were enough individuals refusing to buy products that had been tested on animals, that the companies had to take notice or their profit margins would fall further than they were already starting to do.
You can apply the same situation to the environment. Most people don't care enough to do anything. But there are a few of us who do care. We are the important ones. We have to lead by example, and it's such an easy thing to do.
If you tell 20 people that you know why you are doing what you are doing, 19 of them will nod and agree, and then go back to their lives and not change a single thing they do. The 20th one though goes away and starts doing what you are doing, they will tell people, one of which will probably also go away and start doing what you are doing.... this is how the catalyst starts. It's how it started with toiletries, and now we have animal friendly products on our shelves.
I had someone tell me only last week that they can't be bothered to recycle their plastic because no-one else does, and so him doing so would not make any difference anyway.
You CAN make a difference, even if it seems like your not. All you have to do is give a damn, and tell others you give a damn and why. Just make sure you have your facts correct tho. |

I have many bags of cans and bottles that need to go to recycling centers. I'm half way through the nature saving process. ^-^ _________________

well thank you very much for all of that. i mean it too. i was just asking myself about how, if i even bothered to do all this stuff, then how would it make a difference. but after reading that it does make sense to me. sometimes, though, its hard to stand up for what you as a person think because there are so many people that will laugh in your face or call you a hippie. i saw on tv last night that china has like 16 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world. it kind of changed how i thought because i was thinking that it seemed like the U.S. was mostly responsible for all these problems. well i was wrong. i hate how all these scientists make it sound like we dont have many years left on the planet. it kind of scares me, but maybe thats their point. i hope that we really can make a difference and start working more to make the planet a better place, not just for our survival, but for other species too. _________________

I'm glad I made you realise how important things like this can be. It can be a real struggle to continue when everyone else dosen't seem to be doing anything to help, you end up feeling like you are making no differance at all.
Humanity atm, imo, should be condemed. Not for saying yes to destroying the race, but for not saying no.
If you want a real eye opener, search google videos for a horizon documentary called 'global dimming'. Watch it, and then show it to as many peoople as you can. Whether they want to watch it or not. Be warned tho, it's scary stuff when you stop to think about what they are saying. _________________ Courtesy of Ame-Chan.

Yeah, some things freak me out.
But I know there's nothing we can do but face the facts. Our world is going to end, and it's going to be humanities fault. And they say we're superior to "animals." _________________ need one |

Jeff litters?!
That's unattractive. You should yell at him everytime for it.
Eventually, he'll stop. _________________
